An Endless Passion for Music
For Discovery, for People, for Life...
Hashani Wasana is a Sri Lankan musician, filmmaker and researcher based in the UK. Her creative practice brings together music, film and research, exploring connections between culture, identity, emotion and storytelling.
As a musician, Hashani works primarily with Sinhala-language music, blending classical influences with contemporary and popular genres. Her releases include Seda Mawatha, Latin Kankaariya, Akalaye Wetena, Sandata Ma Kiyu Katha and Snehaye. She was the sole vocalist on Seda Mawatha and Latin Kankaariya and composed the melodies for Snehaye, Me Lassana Rata and Urana Unath Ma. Through her music, she brings traditional and contemporary musical ideas together while celebrating Sri Lankan cultural expression.
Alongside music, Hashani is passionate about visual storytelling. She has written the short film Bubbles and written, directed and produced The Seconds, developing a creative practice that moves between sound, image and narrative.
Hashani holds a Master of Arts in Media Production (Distinction) from York St John University and a Bachelor of Performing Arts in Applied Music (First-Class Honours) from the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo. She has also worked as a visiting lecturer, combining her professional creative experience with teaching and academic practice.
Her current work continues to explore the relationship between music, media, culture and identity, with a particular interest in creating work that connects people and emotions across cultural contexts.
Through her practice as an artist and researcher, Hashani aims to create meaningful work that brings together Sri Lankan cultural perspectives and contemporary creative expression, while building connections between the UK and Sri Lanka.
